Westport
July 6th, 2009We must escape the rush of the city and flee west, where the ocean kisses the shore with both caress & crash. The city gives us life; its heartbeat pulsing along with our own, and yet it is not all-sustaining. Drive. Drive. Around the Puget Sound to Mother Pacific. Other vehicles on the highway attempt to stop us from continuing, but we will not be deterred. If we must inch along, we must inch along.
A two-bedroom house for 10 people is plenty big, for sleep is not of the highest priority. Beach, fires and works of fire, surfing and skimming, warm Washington days and cool Washington nights, eating and drinking, stories told and stories written, expired film and cameras with sensors capture what was and tell the stories where words fall far too short.

wow
(that wow wasn’t ironic, btw)
i especially love the kite photos – are you allowed to tell me on what kind of camera this was taken and any effects that were added?
The portraits are fantastic.
ohhh… these are great. stuart_selena_will_fireworks_stare.jpg is my favorite. You know my affinity toward late night long exposures.
So very well documented.
What a great weekend! I too love the watching the fireworks shots. The lighting is fabulous.
brilliant
ahhhh. great people, great shots. thanks for sharing a snippet of the experience!
Will and Pansy the kite. Brilliant.
That looks like a fantastic weekend. Missed are many of those people.
Joshua, I love this. So much. Please don’t stop.
rad. good story.
I repeatedly come back to this site throughout the day just to look at the pictures again and again.
I know you use Walgreen’s to process film. I bought an old Minolta off of Craigslist and shot a roll of film on cheap Walgreen’s brand film. They turned out terribly. They were all out of focus and fuzzy, but not in a good way. When I shot, all my pictures were in focus, or so it seemed. Do you think it was the camera, the film, my shaky hand, or maybe I need glasses? Any advice for what I should do to see if that camera or not?
Awesome writing and awesome photos. How do you get that vignette? As seen on the kite photos.
Dave: The film I was using was expired, and the vignette came naturally, as it were.
Courtney: I emailed you a few thoughts on what the problem might be.
Sharolyn: I used a Canon AE-1 with Kodak ISO200 film & a Canon 5D for the digital shots. I didn’t add in the vignette or really edit much at all. The only one’s I touched up a decent amount where the night shots at the bottom.
i always love your phototgraphs…but for some reason, this specific set struck a cord with me – haunting sadness. and braveness. and hope. and stories. and choosing to believe in life.
these photos stopped me in my tracks and forced me to slow down. something i don’t do nearly enough.
thank you. :)
The last few pictures remind me of the movie Sand Lot when it is the 4th of July in the movie.
This looks like the best 4th of July ever.
Love the hazy beach and firework shots.
Cool people, genius pics, shared lives and memories- like it.
Skimming. Something I have never done but would love to try.
Then again. There are not many places that one can practice here in Memphis.
1) maybe you should used expired film at my wedding. I want that natural vignette.
2) i want to be friends with the guy who has a cigarette and a wet suit
3) you should sell that 6 fireworks series as a print.
the end.
Gorgeous and inspiring photography! The tones are spectacular.
Fun!
i love these pictures. random facebook connection brought me to them. you make it all look stunning
thanks!
