Customer Service
October 20th, 2007Yesterday I went to a few camera shops here in town to look at a couple models I’ve had in mind. Since my camera got stolen, and since I need to replace it to keep that little bit of income coming in, I had the opportunity to reevaluate my shooting options. I have never been loyal to one particular brand, but I do have preferences.
I walked into one store in Ballard that sells new and used cameras. I looked at a few Hasselblads, drooled, wiped off my drool, and then went over to the guy behind the counter.
“Do you happen to have an used Nikon D200’s?” I asked.
“Nikon is shit,” he said with a bit of a scowl on his face. “People always trade in their Nikons and buy Canon. That’s why I have an entire case of Nikon cameras and a half full case of Canons.”
“Ah,” I replied.
“Do you want to shoot professionally or as a hobby?” he asked, now glaring at me.
“Well, that’s a good question. I don’t really know.”
“You better think long and hard about your future before you buy a Nikon. They are complete shit.”
“Ah. Ok. Um, thanks,” I said, a little under my breath.
I promptly left the store, drove across town, and bought a Nikon.
And then I took some photographs.

i’m thinking the Nikon will work just fine :)
You da man! Keep up the shots!
When can we expect to order some great prints?
this is wonderful. made me laugh
i use a nikon at work. it’s not total shit.
canons are better tho ;)
I’m a Canon guy, I love my XTi and I have to say that those pictures you took look like crap. Nikon is for losers.
Now let us be honest.
Those pictures look great and the same pictures with a Canon would have looked great. I hate it when people act that way.
I went into a fish store since I just changed my tank setup and the lady did everything she could to sell me a $300 setup that I did not want/need/afford. All I wanted was some information about African Cichlids. Needless to say when I made the change that day I did not return to her store for my purchases.
You should drive back there to tell that guy that he is completely wrong. I know that it’s probably wrong to act that way, but really.
I have a canon, but you take many, many (much more) beautiful photos with your Nikon. It’s just brand snobbery. I wouldn’t have bought from him either :) I’m pleased you have a camera again…happy snapping!!!
I have run circles around other photogs in the military with their Canons versus with my little Nikon F3.
In other words, it ain’t the tools. Rather, it is the shooter.
If I was a sports photog, I might have to bite the bullet and get a Canon system. But I ain’t one so it is Nikon.
That actually happened to me too when I asked about a Sony Alpha at a camera shop….
Nikon… good choice… did u get a d200?
I’m glad you got a camera again. Those pictures are awesome.
pillar box red & nikon d200!
favorite wine & excellent camera.
where did you end up buying from? glazers?
@leah: Yes. I got it at Glazers, where they were friendly and polite. The place that gave me attitude shall remain nameless, although I am ever so tempted to reveal their identity.
Yeah, I shoot with a Canon, and I have a bunch of friends who are Canon snobs… but, I’m not against Nikons… I’d agree with the person who said earlier - about it being more about the shooter than the camera itself.
Glad to hear you’re back in action!
I’m a Nikon fan as well but have no qualms with Canon…I think they’re both great. I got to shoot with a Nikon D3 while I was in new york and that beast is wicked sweet.
Congrats on getting a replacement camera! The photos look great :)
Shit.
Amazing. My brother happens to blog with a friend of his and talked about customer service as well…on the same day…living on the other side of the country. I’d give a shameless plug right now, but will not do it without your permission. Funny thing about it, he talked about being the person on the other side of the counter.
3 Buck Chuck!!!
Nikon is bueno. No sweat there. What an interesting “character” you met.
That’s what I call a happy ending.
I myself are using Nikon D70.
Love your site.

dude, obviously it is shit (can i say that as a missionary), because the autofocus obviously didn’t work on the third picture down…what a shame…
WINE AND POLAROIDS….two of my loves…and you, make that three!
great story, i want to meet that guy.
Yeah. I shoot with Canon and love them…but that guy is off his rocker.
In the end more than just about anything it is the glass, auto-focus(if you use it) and the noise handling…everything else is just pretty features.
my favorite thing about nikons is that super-handy, SEPERATE aperture control on the front of the grip. that is brilliant. canon’s have one control for shutter speed and aperture. (and it changes it’s function depending on the mode. grr.)
i also prefer the nikon d200 shutter volume. it’s quiet. (my “canon” is aptly named it seems.)
nikons are awesome.
I shoot with a Nikon. When I was covering sports it’s what everyone had so I kind of went along with the crowd. What I realize now is any (almost) camera will do, it is how I am seeing the world that makes the biggest difference.
man i kinda miss you.
if you don’t mind me asking, how much did you get your used nikon d200 for?
I love that House Wine. We sell it at my work.
